UCSD Health Sciences Gender Equity Summit

November 2019

In coordination with the Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences, Dr. David Brenner, we invited Dr. Julie Freischlag to perform an audit of UCSD in terms of gender equity.  Dr. Freischlag was the President of the Society for Vascular Surgery—the only woman to take on the role in the society’s 72-year history—and Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine at UC Davis.  We had a day long summit in which Dr. Sonia Ramamoorthy, Professor of Surgery, summarized the data on salary, leadership, resources, academic promotions etc.  Dr. Freischlag gave a lecture on “Saying Yes” and presented case studies.  There were two sessions in the morning for faculty and afternoon session for Chairs of HS Departments.  The session was well attended both by female faculty and UCSD leadership.

In preparation for the summit in coordination with Dr. Brenner’s office we sent out a survey demonstrating that female faculty are most commonly concerned about lack of female leaders and lack of equity in the academic promotions process.
