Spring 2019 Independent Study Research Assistant

This application is for a spring quarter, 4-unit independent study (SOCI 199) under Prof. Blair-Loy (Sociology) on Gender and Hiring in Academic STEM.

We are seeking a research assistant to work on innovative research led by Prof. Blair-Loy and Prof. Cosman (Electrical and Computer Engineering) on subtle gender barriers to the hiring of new academic scientists. Video-recordings of the candidates’ formal job talks will be analyzed to determine social interactions, such as the number and tone of questions and interruptions, which may vary depending on the candidate’s gender and speaking accent. Results promise to shed light on the larger pattern of the underrepresentation of women in STEM.
